What is a cross flow fan
Cross-flow fans provide wide, even airflow. These fans provide right-angle airflow and a rectangular shape that allows corner mounting and saves space. Cross-flow fans feature a housing with a rear wall and a vortex wall; within this housing is an impeller surrounded by forward-curved blades. As the air passes through the cross-flow fan, it flows laterally and passes the blades twice. They differ from centrifugal fans because the air flows through the fan itself rather than through the inlet. They offer high pressure coefficients and their quiet operation makes AC cross flow fans ideal for a variety of applications.
Cross-flow fans are used throughout the electronics, food service, and printer industries because they provide a low noise ratio and uniform two-dimensional airflow over the entire length of the impeller. They have a long rectangular shape and come with alternating current (AC) or direct current (DC) motors.
Advantages of cross-flow fans
Cross-flow fans are widely used in the HVAC and electronics industries to create a uniform laminar flow to prevent overheating of components. Cross-flow fans provide fairly two-dimensional airflow and can be installed horizontally or vertically. This type of fan is commonly used in a variety of commercial and industrial applications.
Due to their characteristics, they have many advantages over other types of fans, including:
-
More compact, with a long and shallow front
-
Higher efficiency relative to less pressure and placement
-
Long stroke direct ventilation
-
Controlled Versatility
-
Low load requirements when throttling
-
Lower speed
-
Minimal noise
Types of cross-flow fans
There are three main types of cross-flow fans: AC, DC, and high-efficiency EC cross-flow fans. Each type offers a unique set of characteristics that make them viable solutions for different applications.
AC cross flow fan
The main difference between a centrifugal fan and an AC cross-flow fan is the way of airflow. The AC cross-flow fan is characterized by the fact that the cross-flow air flows directly through the fan twice, rather than through the inlet. These fans feature quieter airflow, compact airflow, and high-voltage coefficients, making them ideal for electronic and appliance applications that use AC power.
DC cross flow fan
DC cross-flow fans provide an ideal solution for equipment powered by 12V, 24V or 48V DC power, providing efficient parallel airflow to cooling units, reducing noise and reducing vibration. DC cross flow fans are available with third line options such as:
-
Signal rotation detection
-
Signal frequency generator function
-
Working temperature control
-
Multiple single and dual fan mounting options
EC Crossflow Fan
High-efficiency EC cross-flow fans are centrifugal fans that introduce airflow through the fan instead of the inlet. These fans use an electronically commutated motor that operates on AC power but generates a magnetic field in the manner of a brushless DC motor. These features give this fan the best features of both AC and DC fans for maximum energy efficiency. EC cross-flow fans feature long life, precise control and multiple speed capabilities.
Industries and Applications
Cross-flow fans and blowers provide the best solution where uniform and broad airflow in confined spaces is required, as well as high pressure and speed at low noise and vibration levels. Examples of use cases for cross-flow fans include:
-
Drying device
-
Air curtain
-
Melting machine
-
Transformer air cooling
-
Car Air Conditioner
